I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else.

This awe-inspiring life

You go to a lot of trouble to live your life, to take care of all the details of life. And why? Why do you go to so much trouble? After all, life is very difficult. So what makes it worth all that difficulty? Sometimes you get so caught up in taking care of the day-to-day necessities that you might forget about the spectacular experience of your own existence. You can tend to forget about all the amazing realities of the universe, and the limitless possibilities of what can be.

Yet the fact is, life is just awesome. It’s filled with awe-inspiring people and experiences, objects, concepts, ideas, technology, processes. It’s awesome and it’s filled with awesome stuff. Plus, it’s available to you right now, at any time, anywhere. You can go out tonight, if it’s a clear night, and look up at the sky, and you see little points of light and realize that each one of those little points of light is a massive fireball. Each one is so incredibly far away that you can’t even imagine how far away it is. It’s so far away that the light that you’re looking at, the photons that are entering your eyeballs and registering in your vision, have been traveling for maybe hundreds or even thousands of years to arrive right where you are, right at that moment. That’s pretty amazing. Your existence, your life, is filled with stuff like that.

Think of all the colors you can see. There is so much color in nature, in the whole world, a whole spectrum of different colors. Colors are beautiful. You see colors all the time but do you ever stop and think about them, about how much color adds to your life? The interesting thing about color is that nothing really has color. The color you see is made by light. Some objects reflect more red light, so they look red to you. Other objects reflect more green light. Still other objects reflect blue or orange or pink or whatever color they are. That is the light reflecting off of them. The color is in the light.

But that’s not even the whole story. Because in order for there to be color, someone has to see that color. Otherwise it’s just electromagnetic waves. And of course you use your eyes to see the color. But the color is not even in your eyes. It’s not even in your brain. It goes deeper than that. It exists in your consciousness. And so when you think about color, you can take that all the way into a deep connection to the mysterious, ineffable phenomenon that is your consciousness. You see all these colors in the world and then you’re able to realize, if you’re not there to see them they’re not there.
