Some people regard discipline as a chore. For me, it is a kind of order that sets me free to fly.

Living bridge

Being deeply rooted does not prevent you from adapting to changes. It does protect you from becoming overwhelmed by them.

A clear and steady sense of who you are and what you value, gives you powerful perspective. That perspective helps you know when to be firm and how to be flexible.

If you reject everything new, you end up stuck in the past. If you blindly embrace all that comes along, you can become enslaved and overwhelmed by whimsy and ill-considered situations.

Seek instead to be aware of and open to whatever is the latest while being appreciative and respectful of what has come before. Don’t discard what has long been valued just to make room for something new and unproven.

By its very nature, life is about learning, growing and improving. Yet the quality of life also depends on an enduring perspective that distinguishes the beneficial changes from the harmful ones.

Remain resolute about what matters, while adopting the best of what’s new. You’re a living bridge between the past and the future, so make life good by taking that role seriously.
