Invest your attention
Every time you view a web page, your attention is being auctioned to the highest bidder. The display ads you see are targeted to you, based your browsing history, the things you’ve searched for online, and the products you’ve purchased in the past. And advertisers are willing to pay the website owner when you view the ads or click on them. Something similar happens when you’re watching television and the program cuts to a commercial. Some company, marketing some product or service, paid a lot of money for a few seconds of your attention. Your attention is so valuable that lots of people are willing to pay for it, and do so every day.

But it can be a confusing, crowded, complicated world out there. It’s all too easy for your attention to be hijacked by shiny spectacles or drained away by trivialities. You are perfectly capable of focusing your attention on the meaningful, significant, value-creating aspects of life. However, you have to make a conscious choice to do so.
