Success in the moments

Success in living life is built from success in living each moment of life. To have a successful life, you must have successful moments, strung together with purpose and cohesion into the life you envision.

At any given time, you are living in exactly one moment. All the other moments of your life, the ones that have already occurred and the ones that are yet to come, are unavailable to you. Your actions and thoughts take place in the moment you’re in.

Imagine that you’re about 30 pounds overweight, and have committed yourself to reach a more healthy weight. To do so, you have chosen to follow a specific set of nutrition and exercise guidelines, a fitness program. Others who have used this same program average about five pounds per month of weight loss. So you expect to follow the program for six months.

Initially, six months might seem like a long time to stay on a nutrition and exercise program. But the fact is, you don’t have to stay on it anywhere near that long. You only have to stay on it for one moment at a time. And that is so easy as to almost be trivial. Can you avoid eating a fat-and-sugar-filled snack for just one more moment? Of course you can. No problem. Can you persist in your exercise workout for just one more moment? Sure you can.

And here’s the kicker. After that one moment is over, can you persist for just another moment? After all, you just did it. You have an authentic record of success. If you were successful in the previous moment, you can be successful again in the next moment. And, for that matter, the moment after that, and the one after that, and so on.

In this way, moment after moment, success is built. Just a little success, a little discipline, a little self control, a little bit of purposeful action, for just one little moment. Then, simply do it again.
