Be there for people

Communication technology connects people like never before. Yet it can also facilitate individual isolation.

It’s possible for many people to live long stretches of their lives devoid of any in-person interaction with others. At every opportunity, resist the tendency for that in your own life.

No electronic exchange, no matter how rich and robust, can substitute for inhabiting the same space with other people. We are highly social beings, and we thrive on the presence of others.

With so many alternatives, it can seem like an extreme inconvenience to be there in person. Yet that very inconvenience, and the sacrifice it represents, greatly enhances the value of the interaction.

Seek out and seize upon the opportunities to be there for the people in your life. Do so especially for those who matter most to you.

Your presence has incomparable value to others, and you benefit greatly each time you share it. Connect often in the very best way of all, by being there.
