Constant updates

by Ralph Marston

Being up to the moment on everything leaves little opportunity to gain perspective on anything. It’s great to be informed, but overwhelming to be constantly inundated with data.

Understanding comes from working to process and integrate the raw information. That’s not usually something that can be done in real time.

Left to its own devices, information technology will bombard you with endless updates. Yet up-to-the-nanosecond data cannot take the place of well-contextualized knowledge and discernment.

On a regular basis, disconnect from the updates. Give yourself time and mental space to make good and useful sense of what has happened.

Perhaps you’ll miss the latest data point or two. What you’ll gain, however, is sure to be much more valuable and enduring.

Most of the time an insightful response is superior to an instant response. Rather than becoming a slave to updates, give yourself the opportunity to transform what you know into what you can put to good use.
