Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Resourceful, resilient, and robust

by Ralph Marston

It’s difficult enough to make one thing go perfectly. It’s nearly impossible that everything will be perfect.

You have a moderate chance of picking one winning lottery number. You have pretty much zero chance of picking all six.

If your objective depends on the perfection of every component, you’re probably not going to reach it. When just a single flawed step can ruin the whole process, that’s a fragile process, and the odds are against you.

A much more robust approach is to expect imperfection and be prepared to deal with it. Instead of needing everything to go perfectly, build on the ability to make adjustments to the steps that don’t go exactly as expected.

Perfection is great when you can get it. But don’t become so dependent on perfection that you never get anything completed.

Give your best to the effort, and be ready to quickly recover when that effort doesn’t produce workable results. Develop and depend on your own resourcefulness and resilience, and you won’t be held hostage to the need for perfection.
