The test of courage comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority.

Encountering resistance

by Ralph Marston

In living your life you can expect to encounter all sorts of resistance. Move fast enough, for example, and the air itself will fiercely resist you.

Gravity resists your efforts to stand and climb, people resist your various intentions, unexpected situations resist your plans. There’s not much you can seek to do without running up against resistance.

Yet as difficult as resistance makes things, it also enables. Not only does gravity hold everything together, it also compels you to build strong muscles.

The resistance of air, transformed by technology into lift, makes airline travel possible. You’re forced to deal with life’s many forms of resistance and as a result, many good things happen.

Resistance cannot be eliminated, but it doesn’t have to win. You have purpose, resourcefulness, creativity, imagination, you can build strength and exercise it wisely in the face of resistance.

Over and over again you’re going to meet resistance. Each time, determine how to approach it as an opportunity and that’s what it will be.
