Positive, respectful presence

by Ralph Marston

It’s great when you’re willing to be helpful. Yet that’s no reason to force your helpfulness on anyone.

Sometimes your assistance will be heartily welcomed. But don’t just assume it will always be.

When being helpful, it’s crucial to also be respectful. Otherwise your good intentions can come across as condescending, domineering, or worse.

When you seek to help, first offer that help in a way that’s genuinely respectful and considerate. Take care not to be offended if your offer is refused.

Others have their own reasons for accepting or declining your assistance. And just because you’ve made the offer doesn’t mean you’re owed an explanation.

Graciously express your desire to help, and graciously welcome whatever the response may be. To be truly helpful, a positive, respectful presence is the best way to begin.
