People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing-that's why we recommend it daily.

Well tempered ambition

by Ralph Marston

Enough effort is good, more than enough can be even better. But too much is counterproductive.

You have to walk a fine line between maintaining diligence and falling into obsession. That can indeed be a challenge.

It helps to practice self awareness and honest reflection. Watch what you’re doing at any given time, and keep yourself reminded of where it will lead.

If you find yourself edging toward carelessness and negligence, respond by encouraging yourself to work a little harder. If you begin to experience anxiety and constant preoccupation, take that as a sign to back off.

Moderated and well tempered ambition will enable you to achieve great things. Yet unchecked ambition will quickly get you into big trouble.

Push yourself, and also watch yourself. Find just the right amount of effort that is highly productive and sustainable for the long term.
