Better alternative

by Ralph Marston

When you fight against a problematic situation, the best you can do is break even. If you manage to get rid of the problem, you end up back where you started.

And it’s likely the problem will return. After all, you’ve re-created the situation from which it originally arose.

Instead of merely fixing what’s wrong, look for how you can replace it entirely with a better alternative. That way, you avoid having to deal with the issue again and again.

Learn to go beyond a narrow focus on the difficulty. Open yourself to the potential opportunities it represents.

Yes, fulfilling any of those opportunities will almost certainly require more effort than simply fixing what’s broken. Yet the value you’re able to create will be far greater and longer lasting.

Don’t settle for a recurring problem when you can replace it with permanent value. Envision a better alternative, and do the work to bring it to life.
