Improve your past

by Ralph Marston

Your memory of the past is affected by what you’re going through in the present. As your current perspective changes, your recollections shift.

There are objective ways to keep exact records of events. But there’s no way to preserve an objective account of how you feel.

Your present feelings change over time, and that changes even the way you remember previous feelings. The fortunate result is, by feeling better about the present you can also feel better about the past.

You cannot change what has actually already happened. But neither are you doomed to continue living with your negative feelings about it.

That’s why resentment can be so toxic and forgiveness can be so liberating. You do have a very specific history that always stays with you, yet you have plenty of latitude in how you carry that history.

Make the choice to carry it forward in a way that’s most beneficial and life affirming. Practice forgiveness, gratitude, and courageous resilience, to improve your past as well as your present and future.
